Pecan Toffee Crumble – A Simple Topper for Your Sweet Potatoes

On Monday nights I usually participate in a Twitter-chat called Foodiechats* which runs for about 2 hours where the moderator asks questions based on the night’s theme.  This past Monday’s chat was, of course, Thanksgiving themed and one of the questions asked if you try new recipes or stick with tried and true.  I feel I stick with the tried and true but after going over my to-do list for this year’s Thanksgiving Dinner I realized there’s one side dish I do experiment with; the sweet potatoes.  After trying out a few different ways to jazz them up over the past couple years I returned to the one I knew worked best and was the simplest: a pecan toffee crumble.   (more…)


Sopa de Tomate! Tomato Soup Recipe Learned in Barcelona

A couple of weekends ago Cheryl and I traveled back to Washington DC to see some friends and ended up having Sunday Brunch at Taberna del Alabardero.  Normally brunch is brunch but this particular Sunday they were hosting a Feria del Abril event.  Dancers, food, drink.  Lots and lots of them.  One small bite offered was a little glass of gazpacho.  It reminded me of a tomato soup Cheryl and I learned how to make in Barcelona while we were on our honeymoon.  I didn’t think I’d have a chance to make it so soon but Chicago cooperated and one day last week the temperature was up over 80°F.  Perfect opportunity to make this quick and easy summertime soup. Christmas Cookie – Pecan Tassies

Here’s another of my favorite Christmas cookies (What ones don’t I like? The ones I don’t make of course.  Sheesh!).  You’ll need a mini-muffin pan for these.  I didn’t have one for the longest time since I never made mini-muffins, and still don’t.  I did however gain one when Cheryl and I got married and have made these cookies ever since.  (more…)

Please please please! No more turkey this weekend!

Whew!  So happy Thanksgiving weekend is coming to a close.  I didn’t overindulge too much, but just enough to make going to the gym tomorrow a must.  Sorry, no leftover turkey recipes for this Sunday Dinner.  All turkeyed out after eating it non-stop for the past few days.  We still have almost half a turkey left so don’t worry, there will be a recipe using it sometime this week.  Just not today!  (more…)
